The Brazilian attacker and star of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the Best Player of the French League award granted by the UNFP (Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels). In the best player race, Neymar beat his teammates Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe. The Spanish coach Unai Emery achieved the best coach award.
Neymar, 26, attracted more votes among professional players than the other three nominees: Uruguayan Edinson Cavani (28 goals) and Frenchman Kylian Mbappé (13 goals and 7 assists) and France`s Florian Thauvin (Marseille) 22 goals and 10 assists).
Although he has not played since last February 25 after having an injury in his right foot, Neymar won the prize in his first year in France, thanks to its 19 goals and 13 assists in only 20 games. PSG made him the most expensive soccer player in the world by paying 222 million euros to Barcelona for the world-shaking transfer.
"I would like to thank all of my teammates," Neymar said on beIN Sports television. "I`m honored and very happy with our season. I couldn`t have won this trophy without my teammates."
The legendary Brazilian striker Ronaldo Nazário was in charge of giving him the prize. The ceremony was held in the Armenonville pavilion, in the west of Paris.
