BNP (Fakhrul) vs BNP (Mosharraf)

Political observers think that the breakdown process of BNP started through the oath taking of the party`s elected MP Zahidur Rahman Zahid. Through this BNP has clearly got divided. Only two days before in party`s standing committee meeting, BNP leaders decided that none of the elected party member would join the National Parliament and would not take any action over Begum Khaleda Zia`s parole.

Multiple responsible sources said that in this meeting, BNP`s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir gave his opinion in favor of not taking any firm position against swearing in. But that decision was taken at the standing committee under pressure of Khandaker Mosharraf  Hossain and other leaders. But within 72 hours of the standing committee`s decision, a BNP member took the oath. And such a person took the oath who his from Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir`s area. Several BNP sources have confirmed that Zahid had a long meeting with the secretary general at his residence last night (Wednesday).

A BNP leader said on condition of anonymity that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has given a pledge to the government that he would make BNP take part in the Parliamentat any cost. The leader claimed that he is directing the party on the basis of the government`s direction in exchange for a huge amount of money. He said that before the election, if BNP had given the condition that they would take part in the elections in exchange of Begum Khaleda Zia`s parole or bail, then the government would undoubtedly accept that demand. In that case, the BNP could have done better if the elections were held with Khaleda Zia. But BNP didn`t raise this claim then since they could not trust Mirza Fakhrul at that time. Now, when the deadline for taking oath has come to its last stage, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has brought Begum Zia`s health issue forward. His main goal is to take the elected BNP members to the parliament using this issue. And through this he wants to give legitimacy to the current government and the December 30 elections. However, several BNP leaders said, Begum Zia`s sole authority within the party has reduced after the December 30 elections. All the members of BNP standing committee agreed to form joint leadership within the party. That`s why Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is now trying to divide BNP. Now it is assumed that five MPs who have not been sworn in, will take oath within next three days.

According to the Parliament Secretariat sources, if BNP members make an appeal stating their failure of taking oath by 30 April, even if they decide to take oath after April 30 without submitting any application but can show their logic, their seats will not be declared void. It is now clear that BNP is in verge of disruption over the swearing in.

Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin, one of top leaders of BNP, said, "The government is not planning to dissolve BNP, rather some opportunists of the party are planning so and they are enough to destroy the party.  Zahid has taken the oath following their instruction."Many leaders of BNP think that two parts of BNP are visibly fighting each other. Split between these two sections has become clear after Zahid`s oath. In this breakdown, a part will be led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and another will follow standing committee`s senior leader Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, confirmed several sources. It is being speculated that this breakdown process will complete soon. In this context, they mentioned that Fakhrul took the party to the December 30 elections without having any demand met.
