During her first state visit to abroad after assuming office for the third consecutive term, Sheikh Hasina stated that she would no longer be the Prime Minister. She also informed that she would retire from office after the current term. No one took this statement seriously then. But Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is still firm on that speech. She even repeatedly mentioned this statement in various discussions.
The Prime Minister is warning various ministers, MPs and close friends that this will be the end of her journey. She went to the National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital on last Thursday and Friday. Three doctors have examined PM`s right eye intensively. One of them was the former Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services. Another person was his former adviser. The third physician was director of the National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital. The Prime Minister told them this is her last term. She is not willing to take responsibility anymore. It has been learned that the PM already started planning for her life after retirement. Not only this, some cabinet members greeted Sheikh Hasina after returning home from Brunei. They want advice from the Prime Minister on various official matters. Then the PM ordered them to catch on their own responsibilities. She said, "I am getting tired. I will not take any responsibility after this term."
It is to be noted that during her visit to Germany, Prime Minister told to an Al Jazeera journalist in an interview, "I am not willing to take the responsibility further." After this decision, there was a storm of protest. She was requested to change her decision. Several media were vocal about this issue back then.
But the Prime Minister is firm on her decision. Her logic to this decision is everyone has his/her an expiry date. She wants a reputable exit. That is why she will not contest the upcoming elections anymore. But she said that she would lead Awami League until the 100th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation and Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh. Then she would step down from Awami League’s leadership. Not only this, the Prime Minister has said in this conversation that she is not interested in selecting or nominating any of the family member as the heir of Awami League. Awami League`s grassroots leaders and activists would choose their party leader. Sheikh Hasina personally doesn`t want direct participation of her children in Awami League`s leadership. But she also said that if the party leaders and activists select someone through the council, then it will be their decision. The Prime Minister told her closest persons that she wants to spend her retired life with her grandchildren. She also has plan to read a lot of books and write also. But Sheikh Hasina`s sudden announcement made a strong reaction in the party. The party members continuously requested PM to rethink about her decision. But despite these requests, the Prime Minister remains firm on her decision till now.
