Agent of govt: Allegations & counter-allegations in BNP

BNP has obtained information about Dr. Kamal Hossain`s secret connection with the government. In the meeting of the BNP standing committee`s policymaking body, this information was presented. The vital members of BNP standing committee Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy presented this information. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also leaked the news about a secret meeting that took place between the government and Mirza Abbas. There were allegations and counter-allegations about the government`s agent in BNP. Yesterday, the BNP standing committee`s policymaking meeting discussed issues of the future of Jatiya Oikya Front and parting ways with Jamaat-e-Islami. At one point of the discussion, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas complained that Dr. Kamal Hossain has a secret connection with the government. He is working as the law adviser of at least four organizations of the government. If Dr. Kamal Hossain is against the government, then why he would do it! Mirza Abbas presented the second evidence saying when Sultan Mohammad Mansur took the oath as an MP, Dr. Kamal said that he would decide after discussing this issue whether the other MPs will take oath in parliament. They believe Dr. Kamal Hossain said this following government`s direction. Mirza Abbas` third allegation against Dr. Kamal Hossain is that the letter which was sent to the US Ambassador by Dr. Kamal about the current political situation of Bangladesh, he said there is currently no convenient situation to hold another election. That is why, the government should concentrate on establishing good governance and show respect for democratic values, and to implement this, he asked for international pressure through this letter. Dr. Kamal Hossain apparently validated the election on 30 December with this letter. This letter reflected in the recent report of the US State Department on Bangladesh`s election where it stated that the election of Bangladesh was not fair and neutral, but it did not ask for canceling the election and hold another election again. Mirza Abbas believes that the government is weakening BNP using Dr. Kamal. He has secret connections with a number of ministers, MPs, and policymakers of the government. And he is working under their direction. Mirza Abbas suggested cutting ties with Dr. Kamal immediately. He believes due to BNP’s association with Dr. Kamal Hossain, BNP has lost its popularity. A heated situation is prevailing in BNP at this moment following the statement of Mirza Abbas. However, Mirza Fakhrul made counter-allegations saying many BNP leaders compromised with the government too to save themselves from various cases and arrests. He gave an example of Mirza Abbas who compromised with the government to save his bank and himself from court cases. But Mirza Abbas ruled out such allegations saying, ‘The number of cases that had been filed against me is double in number compared to yours.’ To cool down the tensions, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan intervened and said, ‘Whatever we are doing now is going in favor of the government. The more we will get divided the more the government will be benefited.’ He urged the senior BNP leaders to determine what they should do now. Nazrul Islam Khan also said, ‘We must be organized and strengthen the organization to release Khaleda Zia.’ He also requested to reconsider the expulsion order that the party declared against those who participated in the upazila elections. Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said BNP is unable to do much with the current standing committee. Mirza Fakhrul along with other leaders also discussed the meeting that took place with Tarique. They believe due to Tarique’s repeated wrong decisions BNP is unable to declare any party programs let alone start a movement. The meeting also discussed Chatra Dal’s defeat in the recent DUCSU election and requested to pay attention to the student wing.

Sources said although the BNP leaders debated on various issues in that meeting, they could not reach any conclusions. The political experts believe this clueless attitude of BNP will create more division in BNP.
