Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has been shifted to a cabin, from the ICU, now that his condition has improved. If everything goes according to the plan, his bypass surgery will be conducted within the next 10 to 15 days. The doctors of Dhaka have said that even if the AL leader recovers after the surgery, he will still have to live under restrictions and reduce his workload.
On the other hand, the council of AL is scheduled to be held in October. Considering Quader’s health condition, AL is thinking anew for its general secretary position. AL’s Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif has already been made the acting general secretary following article 25/1/c of AL’s constitution. Sources said that there is a chance that Quader may not be in the general secretary position in the next council of AL.
Obaidul Quader currently holds two vital positions- one in the cabinet as Road, Transport and Bridges Minister, and one in the party as general secretary. The policymakers believe he should be relieved from one of the two responsibilities for his healthy and normal life.
Many want him to hold his position in the cabinet as the works of Padma Bridge and Metro Rail are underway. Besides, for making AL stronger as an organization, the party needs an active general secretary who can keep the party leaders and workers always motivated. Because it is true that despite winning the recent elections, AL is still weak in some areas. At this point, Mahbubul Alam Hanif might be the name to replace Quader. But he is not acceptable to many AL leaders and workers. So, a number of names have come to the limelight who can reach the party leaders and workers and be acceptable to the common people.
Agriculture Minister and AL Presidium Member Dr. Abdur Razzak’s name suddenly came in the limelight for this position. He is known as a gentleman to people who played a vital role in AL’s election manifesto committee. He is also very close to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sources in AL said his name suddenly came up in discussions.
Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak’s name also came up in discussions. He did not get the nomination from AL in the December 30 election. After being deprived of nomination from his party, he has been working closely with the prime minister who gives him various crucial assignments. Moreover, another Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman’s name came up in the discussions too. However, he is far behind in this race for various reasons.
As a surprise, Dr. Dipu Moni’s name has also been discussed for this position. Sources in AL said Quader’s re-election was almost certain in the upcoming council until he became ill. Several AL leaders believe if he gets excessive pressure in such physical condition, it can be a risk to his health and AL may lose a vital worker. For this reason, there have been talks about AL’s new general secretary and it is AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who will make the final decision. However, everything depends on Quader’s physical condition.
