In the national election of 1986, Awami League President contested from five different constituencies. Again, in 1991, she contested from five constituencies. However, during the elections of 1996 and 2001, she contested from only 3 constituencies. It reduced to only two constituencies in the 2014 election. With its continuation, she again purchased two nomination papers to contest form two different constituencies, which are Gopalganj-3 and Rangpur-5 constituencies. One is her paternal home and the other is her father-in-law’s house. Yesterday, Sheikh Hasina called upon Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and gifted her the Rangpur-6 constituency. The AL president won from this constituency unopposed in the election of 2014. Later, she left this constituency for the Speaker, who also won unopposed. Since then, Shirin Sharmin has been working there for the past five years.
AL President Sheikh Hasina said, ‘It is no longer necessary for the elected representatives of the people to contest from multiple constituencies.’ Therefore, she has decided to contest from only one constituency.
It is to be noted that Sheikh Hasina has never lost from the Goaplganj-3 constituency. Every time she won a landslide victory.
