Fakhrul’s bondage to India Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is a Bangladeshi politician. He currently holds the post of secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He was a member of the parliament for Thakurgaon-1 constituency from 2001 to 2006.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul gave a bondage that states if BNP wins the election, its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will not be the prime minister. He gave the bondage with a 7-point assurance to India and the United States. A number of senior BNP leaders have recently come to know about this bondage. A controversy is ongoing in BNP now on how could Fakhrul give such bondage without discussing this at the party forum.

It has been reported that Fakhrul submitted the 7-point bondage to important persons of India and the US on the second week of November. Sources confirmed the bondage was prepared at Motijheel’s law chamber of Dr Kamal Hossain. The seven points of the bondage are as follows:

1) Khaleda Zia or Tarique Zia will not be the prime minister if Jatiya Oikya Front wins the national election.

2) Nobody from Zia family will be included in the cabinet.

3) The Jamaat candidates who are contesting with ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol will not be in the cabinet.

4) The militants or fundamental groups will not be given shelter or patronized.

5) No action, based on political vindictiveness, will be taken against Awami League or any other political party. The outgoing leaders and workers will be spared from mass arrest.

6) Khaleda or Tarique will not be released without following legal procedures.

7) Even if BNP gets an absolute majority in the parliament, it will run the country in accordance with Jatiya Oikya Front.

According to the responsible sources, the high officials of India and the US asked for BNP’s definite position on those points in a series of meetings. BNP secretary general and Dr Kamal Hossain verbally swore to follow each point of the bondage. However, India wanted a written document. In this regard, a written document was prepared in English at the chamber of Dr Kamal Hossain.

Sources said a Chattogram based BNP leader has recently met a high official of Indian High Commission in Dhaka in a dinner party and discussed this matter. This BNP leader said that he was unaware of such bondage. Later, he asked the BNP secretary general but the latter refused to comment on this. An outrage is ongoing in BNP regarding this.
