Awami League heavyweights who`re not in election

After the announcement of the eleventh parliamentary election schedule, there has been a tide in Awami League candidates buying nomination paper. More than four thousand nomination aspirants have collected nomination papers. Top AL leaders including Awami ward level chairmen, union chairmen are not been lagging behind in buying nomination papers. But still there are some top-level leaders who are also in the policy-making body of Awami League but they are remaining far from this tide. They do not want nomination and have made it clear that they would not participate in the election.

However, they did not lose their importance in Awami League because of their decision on participation. Rather, their importance has increased. Multiple sources of Awami League said that these leaders will play an important role in assisting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in election-related issues like campaigning, strategy making, and nomination process.

HT Imam: HT Imam is at the top of the list of those leaders who did not seek nomination even after being in a favorable position in the party. He is acting as the co-chairman of Awami League`s election management committee. H. T. Imam has been serving as an adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the last ten years. In the first phase, he was the Prime Minister`s Public Administration Adviser and in the second phase, he served as the political adviser. Many think that his contribution to Awami League to come to power in 2008 was very important. He looks after the details of the elections. He did not buy the nomination paper and it is known that he will not participate this time. Although he did not buy the nomination, his son Tanvir Imam will contest from a seat of Sirajganj.

Nuh Ul Alam Lenin: He is an important leader of Awami League and member of party`s Advisory Council. He is also very close and trusted to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He is involved in many empirical works of Sheikh Hasina and works related to preparing Awami League`s election manifesto. He is one of the policy makers of Awami League. In the electoral process of Awami League, he performed very important duties. Many responsible sources have confirmed that he is not contesting this time.

Dr. Mashiur Rahman: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina`s economic adviser is Dr. Mashiur Rahman. He has been working as Prime Minister`s Economic Adviser for 10 long years. He is also very reliable and faithful to the Prime Minister. He played an important role in making the Prime Minister`s economic policy strategy. He will not participate in this election. Although, multiple sources said that he was interested in participating in a seat from Bagerhat, but on the personal request of the Prime Minister, he suppressed his interest.

Mustafa Jabbar: He works closely with Prime Minister`s Information Technology Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Multiple source of Awami League confirmed, he will perform an important role in the election campaign that will conduct social media campaign this time. However, he will also not participate in the election. It is known that he will not be in the election campaign, instead, he will play an important role in connecting people with the social media campaign.

Yeafesh Osman: Yeafesh Osman is serving as the minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology for 10 years. At first, he was the state minister and then he was promoted as the full minister. Although he is associated with various research and campaigns focusing the election, he will not be in the election this time.

Omar Faruk Chowdhury: One of the organizations of Bangladesh Awami League is Bangladesh Awami Jubo League. Hundreds of Jubo League leaders have expressed interest in participating in the elections and they have bought nomination papers. But Jubo League chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury did not apply for the nomination. He is working to build Jubo League as a talented and creative organization. He is more focused on experimental works. Jubo League has been working for a long time on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina`s state principle and empowerment of the people. Besides, Jubo League is conducting researches on various aspects of empowering people of Bangladesh. He will not participate in this election.

Generally, we see in the better democratic countries of the world that those who do not participate in the election play an important role in determining the government`s policy. This culture has been prevailing in Bangladesh slowly as well. Many heavyweight AL leaders did not seek nomination this time and this is an example of the previous claim.
