Jatiya Oikya Front is in dilemma whether to go to the polls or not after the second-round talks with the 14-party has ended today. The Oikya Front leaders took almost two hours to appear before the reporters for the post-dialogue press conference. Mahmudur Rahman Manna declared that the dialogue has not been successful and so, he proposed for the final programs. However, Dr. Kamal Hossain and BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul opposed Manna`s viewpoint. They proposed to continue preparation for election and movement side by side. Mirza Fakhrul wants to carry the last hope for a free, fair and neutral election until the submission of the nomination. Dr. Kamal Hossain said, `Let`s see what happens after the election schedule is announced. If we see that the government is biased in its decisions and the Election Commission (EC) is unable to carry out its duties freely, we have the chance to boycott the election.` Nagorik Oikko leader Manna asked, `How will you go to the polls? The government has not accepted any of our demands yet.` Dr. Kamal again differed with Manna and said, `Except the first and second demands, the government has accepted rest of our demands in principle.` Dr. Kamal said, `After the election schedule is announced, we have to observe the role of EC. Then we can make a decision.` BNP secretary general believes if they boycott the election now, those interested to get the nomination will join Bikalpa Dhara or Nazmul Huda’s party.
In that case, the government will try to hold the election without Oikya Front. The BNP secretary general wants to observe the activities of the government and EC after the election schedule is announced. Besides, he emphasized increasing organization strength and public relations. BNP’s stance is that if it must start a movement, it should be done after the election schedule is announced. At that time, it will be easy to bring people in the streets. JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab believes they should make preparations for both election and movement. He believes the government may fool Oikya Front. According to him, the scenario can be that Oikya Front prepares for the movement but not for the election. However, after the election schedule is announced, EC is working freely and the government is not interfering in any of its activities. What will Oikya Front do then? Gano Forum and Jatiya Oikya Front leader Mostafa Mohsin Montu agreed with ASM Abdur Rab. He said, ‘We should finalize the list of candidates and how many seats BNP will share with its alliance partners.’ Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘The 20-party allice has already resolved this matter among them. Now, it is to finalize with our Oikya Front partners which we will discuss after we return from Rajshahi.’
