BNP to be listed a militant organization in US?

In the wake of the verdict of 21 August grenade attack case, BNP could be listed as a `militant organization` in the United States. US Embassy sought the full copy of the verdict from the foreign ministry of Bangladesh. An official from the US Embassy said that after reviewing the full verdict, the embassy would send its opinions to the US State Department.

According to US embassy sources it has been learned that the name of some organizations that are sensitive to the United States came forward in the verdict of 21 August grenade attack case pronounced yesterday (Wednesday). The involvement of a Pakistan occupied Kashmir based militant organization `Hizbul Mujahideen` with the attack carried out in 2004 came forward. `Hizbul Mujahideen` is blacklisted as a terrorist organization of the United States. The name of the militant leader Yusuf Butt came in the verdict of the case. And according to US Department of State, Butt is an objectionable character. In the judgment given by Judge Shahed Nuruddin yesterday, evidence of the involvement of Bangladeshi militant organization `Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami` has been found. Harkat-ul-Jihad is also a black listed terrorist organization in the United States. According to the verdict, BNP acting chairman Tarique Zia had met several times with all these militant organizations. He provided support for their militant activities and state facilities for them. The court mentioned in its verdict that not only Tarique Zia, but several leaders of BNP are also involved in this incident. For this reason, two BNP leaders—former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and former deputy minister for education Abdus Salam Pintu have been given death penalty. Apart from Tarique Zia, the BNP leaders who have been pronounced life imprisonment include Harris Chowdhury and Kaikobad.

The United States policy on militancy has mentions if an organization uses terrorist organizations or individuals in any work, the organization will be considered as an aid to militant organizations. The US Embassy thinks that if Tarique and BNP leaders have caused the grenade attack in the presence of `Hizbul Mujahideen` and `Harkat-ul-Jihad`, then BNP can be blacklisted as a militant and terrorist organization according to US policy. However, if the organization can take initiatives against the convicted responsible for the attack then BNP may not be included on this list. But if Tarique Zia`s direct contact with these militant organizations is found in the verdict, then Tarique alone will be blacklisted. If a person or group is included on the US black list as a militant, the United States prohibits the entry of the person in the United States. The US administration cuts relations with such organizations/persons. Whether such decision will be made in relation to BNP depends on how the embassy interprets the verdict.
