London police arrest Wikileaks founder Julian Assange

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been arrested and taken into police custody today (Thursday) after being evicted from the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London seven years ago to avoid extradition to Sweden over a sexual assault case that was referred as `politically motivated` and has since been dropped.

A statement published by London`s Metropolitan Police said the Ecuadorian government had withdrawn asylum for Assange because of repeated violations of international conventions. It was also stated that the officers have been invited into the embassy by the ambassador.

The 47-year-old Australian national, responsible for leaking state secrets that embarrassed governments across the world, had refused to leave the Ecuadorean Embassy claiming he would be extradited to the US to face charges if he got arrested.
