Saudi woman granted asylum in Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that Canada has granted asylum to the young Saudi Rahaf Mohammed Al-Qunun, who fled to Bangkok about a week ago after escaping from his family and renouncing Islam.

He said, “Canada has been unequivocal that we will always stand up for human rights and women`s rights around the world. When the UN made a request to us that we grant Ms al-Qunun asylum, we accepted."

He further said that Canada has accepted the request of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and granted asylum to the 18-year-old girl.

The Thai authorities had previously announced that Al-Qunun had embarked on a plane bound for South Korea, where he would stop on the way to Canada.

Rahaf Al-Qunun arrived in Bangkok on Saturday from Kuwait. After arriving to a new country where she will not be forced to get authorization from her “male guardians”, she took advantage of this situation and barricaded herself in a city hotel.
