The husband of a Pakistani Christian woman, who has recently been discharged from death row after being imprisoned nearly a decade in the blasphemy act, sought asylum from the western world. He has pleaded for asylum from the UK, US, and Canada.
According to the international media, Asia Bibi`s husband, Ashiq Masih fears that they may face major dangers in Pakistan. On the other hand, Asia Bibi`s lawyer Saif ul Mulook has left country citing life threats. Yesterday (Saturday) he left for Europe.
In a video message, Ashiq Masih said, "I am worried about the security of my family. I request the UK Prime Minister to help us. We also seek help from Canada and the US leaders. "
Already some countries have shown interest in providing shelter to Asia Bibi and her family. Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament, Tom Tugendhat, said he has asked the Home Office for an urgent evaluation of the situation.
Meanwhile, Asia`s lawyer Saif ul Mulook criticized the Pakistan government saying “What`s painful is the response of the government. They cannot even implement an order of the country`s highest court,”
Mulook further said in the current scenario, it`s not possible for him to live in Pakistan as religious hardliners called for the death of the judges and those who helped acquit Bibi. The lawyer said, “I need to stay alive as I still have to fight the legal battle for Asia Bibi.”
47-year-old Asia Bibi, who was working in the farm in June 2009, got involved in a brawl with her Muslim co-workers over a bucket of water. Her colleagues claimed that, because she had used the cup, they could no longer touch it, as her faith had made it unclean. They put pressure on Asia to convert in Islam. But she continuously rejected it. Her colleagues claimed that after exchanging some heated arguments Asia had made derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
As a result, a case was filed against Asia under blasphemy act. And the court pronounced her death sentence. However, on October 31, the Supreme Court repeals Asia Bibi`s death penalty. From then on, hardliner Muslims started protests demanding the reinstatement of Asia`s death penalty.
