The cyclonic storm `Titli` originating from the Bay of Bengal has claimed nine lives in India so far. Among them, 8 were killed in Andhra Pradesh and one in Odisha. This powerful storm with winds of up to 150 kmph and widespread rains hit eastern India yesterday (Thursday).
Andhra Pradesh`s Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts and Odisha`s Gajapati and Ganjam districts became the center point of the attack. The storm leaves a trail of havoc mainly in these areas. Three lac people were evacuated from Odisha only.
About 6,000 to 7,000 electric poles in Andhra Pradesh have been uprooted. As a result, 4 to 5 lac people are now out of electricity. D Varaprasad, Chief of Disaster Management in the province said that many areas of the province have already been suffering from scarcity of pure drinking water.
Odisha`s officials said that the school-college will remain closed throughout the week. In addition, 1100 shelters have been provided for the evacuated.
Country`s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Andhra Pradesh and Odisha Chief Ministers with `all possible` help.
