At least 20 people including an influential politician of Awami National Party (ANP) Haroon Bilour were killed in a suspected suicide blast targeted an election campaign gathering in Pakistan. The incident occurred in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Tuesday.
At least 65 people were injured in the incident. The injured have been shifted to neighboring Lady Reading Hospital.
Citing the local police chief, international media reported that the preliminary investigation found that it was a suicide attack and the ANP candidate Haroon Bilour was its target. However, no one claimed responsibility for the attack.
The politician Haroon Bilour was the candidate for the provincial council elections to be held on July 25. His father was also an eminent leader of ANP. He was killed in another suicide attack in 2012. The attacker exploded the bomb when Haroon reached the site.
Bilour came from an influential political family of Peshawar, capital of Pakistan`s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Earlier in 2013, the Taliban targeted the ANP candidates.
The attack carried out a few hours after Pakistan`s military spokesman warned of a security threat before the national election.
