At least 25 people died after Guatemala`s Fuego volcano erupted on Sunday. This volcano erupted for the second time this year, leaving more than 300 people injured. The place of the volcano is 40 kilometres south-west of the capital Guatemala City.
Guatemalan Coordinating Agency for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) says the river of red, hot lava and belched thick clouds of smoke spread nearly six miles into the air. Due to the fierce black smoke and lurid smell, it becomes difficult to breathe normally. That is why people are moving away from the area to a safe place.
La Aurora International Airport in Guatemalan City has been closed due to the ash emanating from the volcano.
Guatemalan president Jimmy Morales said a national emergency call center has been set up. Local experts say that since 1974, this is the largest explosion in the country.
CONRED`s Chief Sergio Kabanas told to a local radio station, a stream of lava changed direction towards El Rodeo village. He said, in this incident, the village and its adjoining areas were submerged in the lava wave.
The Guatemalan Government says the number of people affected by volcanic eruptions is about one million.
Meanwhile, the Guatemalan army said they were providing various supports including the removal of ash from the runway of La Aurora Airport.
