Russian military plane crashes in Syria: 39 dead
Russia`s military aircraft crashed in Syria, killing all 39 people on board, including military personnel. The plane crashed on Tuesday while trying to land at Hmeimin air base in Latakia of the northwestern coastal region of Syria, according to international media.
Russian media Interfax quoted the Defense Ministry as saying that all the 33 soldiers and six of crews were all members of the armed forces. It is known that the crash occurred as the Antonov-26 transport plane came down 500 meters (about 550 yards) short of the runway
The Russian Defense Ministry has already submitted a preliminary report to President Vladimir Putin. So far the Russian authorities believe that the accident occurred due to a technical malfunction.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed sympathy to the families of the victims. This is believed to be the biggest plane crash after the start of Russian war in Syria.
Russia is supporting Syrian dictator Assad`s government against the insurgent and militants. And in that battle, Hmeimin Air Base is a major base. But recently after the ousting of IS militants, Putin announced that Russia`s troops from Syria would be taken back to the country. That was supposed to start in December. But since then the number of Russian soldiers killed has been increased.
