Mark Twain’s 109th death anniversary today

Today is the 109th death anniversary of American humorist, journalist, lecturer, publisher and novelist Mark Twain. On this day of 1910, at the age of 74, he died in Ridding, Connecticut, USA. Under the pen name Mark Twain, he wrote travel narratives and adventure stories that made him a distinctive humorist, irascible moralist and finally the beloved figure of American literary culture.

On Nov. 30, 1835, the small town of Florida, Missouri witnessed the birth of its most famous son. Samuel Langhorne Clemens was welcomed into the world as the sixth child of John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens. Little did John and Jane know; their son Samuel would one day be known as Mark Twain - America`s most famous literary icon.

Twain passed his childhood in fighting poverty. After losing his father at only 11, Twain`s family came to the street. To earn money, he had to leave his studies. He worked as delivery boy, bargeman, miner, and store clerk. Together with his younger brother, they have benefited from their ship`s work. But his fortune did not last long. The Boiler blast caused his younger brother’s death which made him broken.

From his early age, he had a strange attraction of writing. Along with writing, he was also a fantastic orator. Apart from the work, he used to write and give speeches. He educated himself in public libraries in the evenings, finding wider information at a conventional school.

In Twain`s writing, there was a blend of wonderful talent, which gave him an immense popularity in a short span of time. He became famous for his classic creation `Tom Sawyer` and `Huckleberry Finn`. The author`s reputation makes him rich quickly. Then he started the business in hopes of more profits. But evil fate did not fail to chase him, he repeatedly suffered losses. After bankruptcy in 1890, Twain realized that the business was not a cup of tea for him, instead the writing was his ultimate place. But after his wife`s death, Twain almost gave up writing. In 1906, he wrote his last book `Ivy`s Diary` in the memory of his wife.

By writing a story of a volatile natured boy and a slave, Samuel Langhorne Clemens aka Mark Twain entered the stage of world class literature. The dark history of America`s slavery was presented in the book. The book also highlights the story of US poverty. Among the writers of the 19th century, Mark Twain was one among many for his individualism. Great American writer Ernest Hemingway once said that all modern American literature has come from Mark Twain`s popular literary work `Huckleberry Finn.
