SD Burman’s birth anniversary today

Today marks the 112th birth anniversary of legendary musician Sachin Dev Burman. On this day of 1906 he was born in Comilla, Bengal Presidency (in present-day Bangladesh) to Raj Kumari Nirmala Devi, the royal princess of Manipur and Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman, son of Maharaja Ishanachandra Manikya Dev Burman, Maharaja of Tripura.

This veteran musician of twentieth century was a music director, composer, singer and folk singer altogether. He is often referred as SD Burman. He is especially known to his audience for his intrinsic nasal voice. This education of classical music plays a pivotal role in the introduction of basic knowledge of music. Burman is the father of celebrated music composer of Bollywood films singer Rahul Dev Burman.

In 1925, Burman came to Calcutta. He started working as a radio singer at Calcutta Radio Station in the late 1920s, when his work as a singer-composer was based on Bengali folk and light Hindustani classical music. In 1932, Sachin`s first record was released from Hindustan Music Productions. The first of his recorded songs includes `Dakle kokil roj bihane` and `E pathey aaj eso priya`. During this time, he gained immense popularity by singing folk songs.

Burman marked his debut in film industry through `Rajani` movie. Alongside doing playback, he played the role of a music director in 13 films. He recorded 4 songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam. In 1944, Burman moved to Mumbai, at the request of Sasadhar Mukherjee and since then he started writing music in Bombay film industry. His first major breakthrough came with the film `Do Bhai` with its song `Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya` sung by Geeta Dutt.

Burman got Filmfare Awards for his work in `Taxi Driver` and Asian Film Society Award for `Pyaasa`. Calcutta established Sachin Dev Varman, and Mumbai has given him international fame in the world of music. This bright star of music world died on 31 October, 1975 in Mumbai.
