`We don`t even have a thousand people`

The opposition forces are preparing to begin simultaneous movement against the government from the first week of October. A meeting of the United Front and the National Unity Process was held at Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD leader A. S. M. Abdur Rab`s residence yesterday (Thursday) night. In the meeting the decision to declare the program of the movement from the Central Shaheed Minar at 11 am on Saturday has been made. According to the sources, in yesterday’s meeting, the program was organized focusing on the rally of the 22nd September. Prior to this, the United Front and the Unity Process have planned to exchange views with people of different classes and professions. Dr. Kamal Hossain and Prof. Badruddoza Chowdhury are also scheduled to hold public meetings in the divisional areas of the country.

According to the United Front sources, the United Front leaders will join Dr. Kamal Hossain`s public meeting on 22 September. BNP will also be invited to this rally.

From the meeting, Dr. Kamal Hossain and Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury will contact with BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir who is currently in New York.  Mirza Fakhrul expressed solidarity with the national unity process. According to the sources, Mirza Fakhrul has said that he would join the rally of Gano Forum. Sources said that there would be no unity with Jamaat. In addition to this statement, the decision of including BNP in National Unity has been taken. In the meeting, a United Front leader said, "It is not possible to gather one thousand people together from all our parties. How will we arrange rally in Suhrawardy Udyan?" Dr.Kamal Hossain also acknowledged that "We need BNP. Although people are welcoming our initiative but they do not want to participate in political programs. That`s why we will need BNP."

According to the sources, the primary discussion was held in the yesterday meeting about a month-long program demanding the non-partisan caretaker government from the 22nd September rally. However, Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury offered to talk about the election issue along with the movement. He said, "We do not want the movement to bring BNP in power again. We want the balance of power. So before we start the movement, we will have to think about the elections and the government." Other United Front leaders also agreed with him. Dr. Kamal Hossain made the decision to discuss the overall issues with BNP after September 22. He said, "BNP confirms that it wants unity. And it is ready to accept the highest sacrifice for the sake of the unity."

According to the sources, the United Front and the national unity process are preparing the strategy keeping BNP in mind. At this stage, the future of the national unity depends on the concessions to be offered by BNP.
