Khaleda vs Tarique in BNP

BNP is one of the main opposition parties of the country. The party has repeatedly said that the fall of the government is their only goal. Ousting Awami League from power is their main purpose since the ruling party is their main opponent. However, analyzing the BNP politics of the last one year, it is seen that BNP is busy fighting between themselves rather than fighting their main opponent. More specifically it can be said that Begum Zia and Tarique Zia`s internal clash is the main struggle of BNP. This struggle divided the party, made the activists confuse and the leaders hesitate. After Begum Zia`s imprisonment, the differences of their political thoughts strongly appeared. Now it has taken a public form. BNP`s Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is now following Begum Zia directly. After the last exclusive meeting with Begum Zia, the BNP secretary-general is no longer taking Tarique Zia seriously. On the other hand, BNP`s senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi is a strong Tarique’s supporter.

In recent times, this conflict has been exposed over the party’s dilemma about joining Dr. Kamal Hossain and B. Chowdhury`s unity process. Imprisoned Begum Zia gave green signal to BNP secretary general about the unity. On the other hand, Tarique Zia showed negative attitude towards the unity. The 20 parties are loyal to Begum Zia and vice-chairmen are also her followers. That is why Mirza Fakhrul has decided to join the unity process after having discussion with them. But the party`s National Executive Committee is controlled by Tarique Zia. The BNP secretary-general did not call the Executive Committee meeting for such a decision.

BNP`s responsible sources claim, leaders like Rizvi and Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel are against joining the unity process under anyone else’s leadership. Tarique Zia told them, Dr. Kamal Hossain and B. Chowdhury`s unity is a trap of Awami League. BNP leaders close to Tarique said BNP should go to the polls, and the 20 parties should participate together. Tarique Zia ordered the parties to go to the elections by distributing 30 seats to the partners. He mentioned Begum Zia`s release as the main election issue. But Begum Zia gave different messages to Fakhrul and BNP lawyers` from the prison. According to the sources, Begum Zia is firm in her previous position. She said, "If needed my corpse will be released from jail, but BNP will not go to the polls under this government."

It is learned that after the position of Begum Zia, BNP leaders started boycotting the elections. A senior BNP leader said, "Tarique is trying to make the party ready for the elections to continue his nomination businesses. But the party will not go to the polls without the release of Begum Zia." That is why BNP senior leaders have turned away from Tarique Zia. But the youths of the party have got agitated at the loss of the party`s dignity. Though the fight seems to be a fight of the seniors and youngsters, the real fight is going on between Begum Zia and Tarique Zia.
