With the initiative bu the US Embassy in Bangladesh, a meeting between President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and Gano Forum President Dr. Kamal Hossain was held on Sunday night. They discussed their long-standing conflict on the leadership issue. Today, another meeting between them is going to be held. In today`s meeting, they will finalize the process of unity. After the Eid, they will host a joint press conference in this regard.
The unity of Dr. Kamal Hossain and Badruddoza has alerted the ruling Awami League and one of the major political parties of the country, namely BNP. The eleventh national elections will be held in December. And against the 300 seats of the parliament, there are at least 900 candidates available from both parties to contest. All of these candidates are fairly in-demand. From Kishoreganj-2 constituency, Awami League`s current MP Suhrab Uddin is definitely a good candidate, former IGP Noor Mohammad is also a good candidate, former Director General of the Department of Health Services and renowned eye specialist Dr. Deen Mohammad Nurul Haque is another potential candidate.
Again, in the Cumilla-7 constituency, professor Md Ali Ashraf, Dr. Pran Gopal Datta or Sahidur Rahman of Cumilla North District Awami League are also potential candidates. This picture is the same in the other constituencies. Each of them has started to work for public welfare in their respective areas.
This picture is also prevalent in BNP where at least 600 candidates will not get the nomination from BNP. Dr. Kamal Hossain and Badruddoza will try to lure them into their party. It is to be noted that Dr. Kamal Hossain has had a good relation with AL. Similarly, Mahmudur Rahman Manna has good communication with the leaders of AL. So, it is viable that they can lure some AL candidates into their party.
On the other hand, Badruddoza Chowdhury was BNP’s foreign minister and later, he served as the President also. Still, now, he has a good communication with BNP. So, it will not be hard for him to bring BNP candidates into his party. This time, Tarique Zia would give the nomination to BNP candidates. So, those who will not be able to give enough money, most of them will not have a nomination from BNP. Moreover, a fraction of senior BNP leaders has become uncomfortable with BNP due to the corruption. These leaders will also join the national unity.
For these reasons, both parties are uncomfortable with the national unity. Both are concerned about whose vote bank will receive a blow by the national unity. All know that this party will not win in the national elections, but those who will leave AL and BNP will get a platform to quit their previous party. Moreover, there is international patronage behind this which both AL and BNP failed to notice.
Whatever conflict is there between AL and BNP, none of them wants to see the emergence of a third party. Their protest during the one-eleven and Ershad government proves this fact.
Tarique Zia has warned Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul not to communicate with Badruddoza and Dr. Kamal without observing them first. AL has also adopted a similar stance against them.
Everyone knows that Dr. Kamal and Badruddoza cannot come to power. But they can play a role in bringing the change in power. However, the question is, for which side they will play a role is the matter of concern in the current political dynamics of the country.
