Professor Muzaffar Ahmed, the president of National Awami Party (NAP) and one of the pioneers of leftist politics in the sub-continent, is undergoing treatment at the city’s Apollo Hospital due to old age complications. Immediately after learning about the news, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took all responsibility for the treatment of Muzaffar Ahmed. Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this after visiting Professor Muzaffar at Apollo Hospital. On that day, Obaidul Quader paid Muzaffar Ahmed`s treatment bills.
In the context of this incident, discussion of many days has come back again i.e. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is always sympathetic towards the leftist politicians. In another language, Sheikh Hasina is pro-leftist. Is it really true?
Left politicians are known to be the critics of Awami League on different issues. Recently they have criticized Sheikh Hasina on several issues including the quota reform movement and the Rampal power plant issue. But after all this, Sheikh Hasina has always supported all the workers of the left parties like CPB, BaSad, Workers Party, in all types of crises.
The leftist politicians always got a special priority from Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. At present, Bangladesh Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menn is the Social Welfare Minister. Matia Chowdhury, a former political leader of the National Awami Party (NAP), and one of Sheikh Hasina`s most trusted political leaders, is in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid is also a Communist party leader. He is also the founder president of Bangladesh Jubo Union and has long been the President of the Chhatra union. Besides, Sheikh Hasina`s close friend, late Baby Moudud, was also involved with left politics.
It is also common in politics that the leaders and activists from the Chhatra Union or Students’ Front got more importance to the Awami League president than the BCL activists. The reason for this is that Sheikh Hasina thinks the leaders of the left student organizations study more than the BCL activists. That is why when the Prime Minister learned that the Left organizations involved in the quota reform movement, she spoke with them.
There is a historical background behind the prime minister`s trusts and beliefs to the leftist politicians. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started the Liberation War soon after the establishment of Pakistan. Leftist activists always supported Bangabandhu in that movement. The Advisory Council of the Mujibnagar government formed during the War of Liberation included Comrade Moni Singh, leader of the Communist Party of Bangladesh and the leader of the NAP, Comrade Muzaffar Ahmed. Moni Singh played an important role in bringing the political support of the Soviet Union to the Liberation War. In addition, during our great Liberation War, the joint guerrilla forces of the NAP, CPB, Chhatra Union fought with heroism in the front line against the Pakistani soldiers. Comrade Nizamuddin Azad and comrade Sirajum Munir became martyred in Comilla`s Betiyara war.
Even after the assassination of Bangabandhu, the first protest was made by the Students’ Union, the NAP and the Communist Party activists. They tried to organize the people against the murder secretly and sometimes openly. For these reasons, the leaders and activists of the leftist parties have different importance to the daughter of Bangabandhu.
However, if the PM Sheikh Hasina is regarded as pro-leftist, it could be termed as redundancy. It is proven in different ways that Sheikh Hasina is sympathetic towards the leftist. Political analysts believe that if the leftist parties show the same attitude towards Sheikh Hasina stand by the side of Sheikh Hasina in the fight against the vindictive political culture, then progressive politics of the country will get a new dimension.
