BNP acting chairman Tarek Zia is absconding in London. BNP cannot communicate with the acting chairman of the party. Though Tareq uses three phone numbers in London, all show switched off. His party leaders and workers cannot reach him over the phone. Therefore, the BNP acting chief is completely detached from his party.
According to reliable sources in BNP, the party`s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul, Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo and other senior leaders are also unable to reach Tarek Zia. Not just the senior leaders of BNP, members of the Zia family, including Shamim Iskander, could not reach Zia over the phone. From Tarique`s side, he is also not contacting anybody from London. It has been going for several days.
Senior BNP leaders are in indecision over determining the party`s policy in Tarique`s absence. They need direction for the three city elections. But, without their chief, they simply cannot make the decision.
Sources said Tarique disconnect communication as a result of failing to talk Jamaat into an agreement. Tarique was expected to hold talks with Jamaat leader Barrister Abdur Razzak, who was in Britain, to mend the relationship between Jamaat and BNP. At the same time, he was to hold talks with the children of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Ghulam Azam, Motiur Rahman Nizami, Mir Qasim, who had been convicted of war crimes and were hanged. Sources said BNP acting chairman has taken a huge amount of money from Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul to restore the relationship with Jamaat. But there was no improvement in the relationship between the Rajshahi Jamaat and BNP. In the last 18-day election campaign, BNP`s mayoral candidate Bulbul did not get any support from the Jamaat-e-Islami unit of Rajshahi. Jamaat is campaigning separately in the 14 council seats. Moreover, Jamaat supporters are criticizing Bulbul and other BNP leaders in social media sites including Facebook.
According to many senior BNP leaders, as Tarique Zia failed to implement his planning in city elections, he cut off the communication with his party. However, this has created new problems for BNP.
In the past few days, BNP leaders in the three cities are making scattered statements. Some are saying that they will boycott the election if there is a rigging, some are saying they are here to unmask the true face of government, some are saying they want to see the end of it and some are saying that they want to surround the police stations and voting centers. The political analysts believe such self-contradictory statements of BNP prove that the party is in indecision. Now, there is only distrust among the BNP. What the party decides tomorrow in the three cities is only a matter of time now.
