BNP in great crisis over acting chairman issue

BNP leaders have realized BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is not getting released soon. Meanwhile, the Election Commission informally informed BNP that their constitution is not acceptable to the commission. BNP is already facing a lot of pressure for the movement issues of Begum Zia`s release, legal battle, caretaker government demand and three city elections. In the meantime, this news from the Election Commission annexed new pressure.  Because BNP must keep section 7 in force if it wants their constitution acceptable to the Election Commission. If it is done, Begum Zia and the fugitive Tarique Zia cannot be in the leadership of BNP. So, BNP`s new concern is, who will be the next acting chairman?

A meeting of senior leaders of BNP was held at the chairperson`s Gulshan office yesterday (Tuesday). BNP`s acting chairman topic dominated other issues at the meeting. BNP leaders discussed the informal information of the Election Commission. But even after a long discussion about what will be the next steps, they cannot make any conclusions.

BNP leaders contacted Begum Zia`s brother Shamim Iskander over the phone yesterday while the meeting was going on. They informed Shamim Iskander about the informal information of the Election Commission. It was decided to make a decision on this issue after discussing with Begum Zia. That is why BNP leaders have suddenly become so eager to meet Begum Zia. BNP wants to have a quick decision on the acting chairman of the party so that they can inform about the acting chairman in time after the formal announcement of the Election Commission.

It has been learned that a discussion about some people who are likely to be the acting chairman has been held. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain was at the first of the line of the potential candidates. He is the senior most among the standing committee members according to the list. But there is a question about bringing Mosharraf to this position. Some said there are many cases against him. If anything happens to him then it will require another change. And such changes cannot be done repeatedly. So in this context, Dr. Mosharraf was excluded from the list.

There was a discussion to make BNP secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the acting chairman. But there is also a hazard. Because, if Fakhrul is made the acting chairman then who will be the secretary general? BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said, "If Mirza Fakhrul is made acting chairman, then BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi will be the secretary general according to the levels of posts. Do we have to obey Rizvi`s order?" So considering this issue Mirza Fakhrul was also excluded.

Analysts said, whenever the BNP has been under great pressure, they made a bizarre decision. Before that, they brought Iajuddin Ahmed in Presidential post after excluding Dr. Badruddoza Chowdhury. Even in 91, they choose Abdur Rahman Biswas for the Presidential post who was totally unfamiliar at that time. And this unfamiliar and `Out of the Box` personalities have no good track record.

It has been learned that Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar has been considered for acting chairman post from the Zia family. The biggest advantage of this senior lawyer is that there is no case against him. The previous record of this former acting president and speaker during the BNP period showed that he will not go beyond the order of Begum Zia and Tarique Zia. But there is also a danger of making Barrister Sircar the acting chairman. In this case, senior leaders like Barrister Moudud, and Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf will not obey him.

Now all issues are being covered because of the tension about the acting chairman. BNP is now in great pressure over this issue excluding the movement for the release of Begum Zia, the movement demanding the caretaker government for election and the campaign for the three cities election.
