The Pakistan Embassy in London has taken an initiative to resolve the BNP-Jamaat conflict over the three city corporation elections. Barrister Abdur Razzak, the influential leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, who is accused of war crimes, held a meeting with the absconding acting chief of BNP Tarique Zia.
In the meeting held on July 7, it has been said that if the relationship between Jamaat and BNP is deteriorating, the most beneficial party will be the ruling party Awami League. And Awami League opponents will be damaged mostly. In such difficult times, the Jamat-BNP relationship should not deteriorate by any means, said the organizers of the meeting.
On Monday, two officials of Pakistan Embassy met with Jamaat`s Nayeb-e-Ameer Mia Ghulam Parwar and central leader Abdul Halim. Jamaat Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was also supposed to attend the meeting. But he was absent due to unknown reasons.
Reliable sources said that since the meeting in London, Shafiqur Rahman and BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan have been directed to resolve the issues between Jamaat-BNP quickly. It has been told from London to resolve their issues as soon as possible. If there is no solution of the conflict, the Awami League will benefit from this. It should not be allowed by any means.
However, no announcement came from Jamaat nor BNP in any city. Today, on Tuesday, Jamaat did not say anything about withdrawing its nomination. Sources said that there could still be some dramatic development any moment. They said that after meeting with the officials of the Pakistan Embassy, the central leaders of Jamaat called upon the Jamaat leaders of Sylhet to Dhaka. They are coming to Dhaka tomorrow. Jamaat central leaders will meet with BNP after meeting with the leaders of Sylhet. Then there will be a declaration soon.
