A group of angry mobs can be tamed by charging baton, firing teargas shell and sometimes it may require firing rubber bullets, in extreme cases. But an idea, hope of salvation or promise of freedom cannot be killed or suppressed with the most lethal bullet in the world.
The Father of Bengali National Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a man who raised hope among his people of freeing themselves from the Pakistani oppression. He was the promise of freedom to his people of a new nation where all would enjoy the freedom of speech, religion and rights, where none shall feel left out or deprived of their rights.
During his 55 years 4 months 29 days of life, he spent 4,662 days or almost 13 years behind the bars, said the Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed. Passing days in prison for being vocal against oppression began from his early school life and it did not stop until he freed his people from the autocratic government who would repress and deprive his people of enjoying their fundamental rights.
For having an unusual height of 5’11” being a Bangladeshi man, the famous magazine Newsweek dubbed him as “Tall for a Bengali” with a bushy mustache and alter black eyes. It was not just his look that brought literate, illiterate, Hindu and Muslim under one roof, it was his emotional rhetoric speech with a spell-bounding voice that till date gives goose-bumps to people.
His famous quote from the speech of 7 March “The struggle this time is the struggle for our emancipation, the struggle this time is the struggle for our independence”, still stirs excitement in the heart of the people and gives the inspiration to fight against any sort of oppression. Many have recognized it as one of the world’s all-time best speeches.
His reputation did not confine in his homeland but it reached in every corner of the world and in his lifetime, he received great remarks from great leaders, writers and common people. Once the revolutionary leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro said-
“I have not seen the Himalayas. But I have seen Sheikh Mujib. In personality and in courage, this man is the Himalayas. I have thus had the experience of witnessing the Himalayas.”
