Fakhrul under pressure over secret meeting

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has held a secret meeting with a Prime Minister’s adviser and two high officials of the government. The meeting was held in the house of a BNP leader (former whip in the parliament) who has been expelled from the party. First, Fakhrul was alone in the meeting and later joined by Barrister Moudud Ahmed and Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. Though government and BNP both maintained strict secrecy about the meeting, the news of the meeting remained no longer a secret. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said to his colleagues, ‘It is not a meeting’. He went there at the invitation of the former whip, claimed Fakhrul. And according to him, it was a just social gathering and they have exchanged greetings, nothing else. That former whip was once the chairman of Red Crescent. He was expelled from the party in 2008 as he was known to be a reformist. Despite being expelled, he has good connection with all BNP leaders.

Investigation of Bangla Insider finds out, this is not the first meeting of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Prior to this, he at least met with that influential adviser for twice. According to the relevant sources, if Begum Zia and Tarique Rahman finally decide not to join the election, then BNP will join the polls under the leadership of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and this meeting is a part of that negotiation. However, a number of sources are saying, Fakhrul wants to join the election convincing Begum Zia, not by dividing BNP. He has informed those government envoys that Beguz Zia has perhaps realized that she would not be able to participate in the election. Mirza Fakhrul also said that he is trying to make Begum Zia understand about the importance of joining the next parliamentary election. Mirza Fakhrul also assured that adviser saying ‘mentionable development has taken place’. BNP secretary general thinks that he is working so that Begum Zia does not boycott BNP from participating in the election if she finally becomes ineligible for the election. According to dependable sources, even if Begum Zia becomes flexible, many leaders of the party may not accept this. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has handed over a list of the BNP leaders to the government agents. The list mentions the names of the adamant leaders who do not want to join any election without Begum Zia. According to the sources, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir wants that the undivided BNP would join the election based on certain conditions. It has been known that he has got the support of the party leaders in this regard. However, a major part of BNP is considering the meeting Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir with the government agents as a conspiracy. They think, due to such activity Begum Zia is not getting the release and BNP is unable to stage any big movement. And thus, the organization is getting affected. But the supporters of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir are considering the matter from a different perspective. According to them, the government is trying to keep BNP away from the election by any means. And therefore, the secretary general is trying to join the election. It is because BNP will surely win in the election. It does not matter whether Begum Zia joins the election or not. However, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been severely criticized after his secret meeting came to light.
