BNP`s lawyers been `managed`?

BNP Chairperson Begum Zia, the acting chief Tarique Rahman (Zia) and other BNP leaders are unhappy with the role of pro-BNP lawyers in the bail hearing of Begum Zia. They believe, the lawyers have been `managed` and therefore, their role during the bail was questionable. However, the BNP leaders believe, since the Bar Council election is forthcoming, the lawyers did not put pressure on the Appellate Division for a quick order.

According to the prison authority, after going to have a health checkup of Begum Zia in the afternoon the jail doctor informed Begum Zia that the court order will be given on May 15. Begum Zia became very angry after hearing this. She said, "I repeatedly told them to tell the court that I am seriously ill, but what arguments did they make?" Begum Zia said, "The government managed them (the lawyers) during my residence case, maybe the government has done the same thing this time."

According to sources, Tarique Zia wants to know about the bail hearing over the telephone from London. BNP`s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi briefed him. According to sources, Tarique told Rizvi that lawyers could not show the proper arguments for bail. Tarique also alleged that the BNP lawyers did not even consult with Tarique`s appointed British lawyer. Tarique told Rizvi that the BNP lawyers interrupted the appointment of Kamal Hossain as a lawyer.

On the other hand, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir himself is disappointed over the statement of lawyers in the hearing of the case. When he came out of the court, he told a lawyer, "What did you say? I could have given better logic than this" Fakhrul said, "Your argument could not express that the matter is very urgent." Besides, Nazrul Islam Khan told the secretary general, "The government and the Anti-Corruption Commission-ACC have done their homework and our lawyers gave political speech." A large section of the BNP thinks that Begum Zia has been given the sentence in the Orphanage corruption case because of the negligence and inefficiency of the lawyers. Begum Zia did not get bail because of their irresponsibility. Even she was deprived of improved medical facilities.

The BNP has repeatedly demanded professional lawyers instead of party lawyers. If the court does not give bail to Begum Zia on May 15, then the distrust of Khaleda, Tarique and BNP leaders will increase on BNP-backed lawyers. Because Begum Zia thinks that she has lost her house because of the lawyers` involvement with the government. Because of the lawyers, her imprisonment is getting longer.
