The verdict on Zia Orphanage graft case against Begum Khaleda Zia is to be given on 8th February. A number of BNP leaders are giving provocative comments regarding the verdict. However, half of the members of the standing committee are silent about it. Even Begum Zia has raised questions about their silence.
Tariqul Islam is a prominent leader of the standing committee of BNP. Tariqul Islam is suffering from an ailing disease. Begum Zia expected that Tariqul Islam, who is also a founding member of BNP, would definitely make a statement regarding the verdict of the graft case.
Former chief of army staff Lieutenant General (retd.) Mahbubur Rahman is also a member of BNP’s Standing Committee. He is known as a reformist within the party. He was the one who proposed to remove Begum Zia from politics during one-eleven. Because of his proposal, he was chased down and was humiliated by BNP activists. He is, however, silent over the ongoing controversy. People are wondering what role Mahbubur Rahman will play if Begum Zia gets convicted in the graft case.
Rahman who believes in clean politics thinks, “We should not do politics regarding the verdict of the court.” He also disregarded the amendment of BNP’s constitution. Another standing committee member, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia who is also sick, opted to maintain silence regarding the post-verdict politics. Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan who happens to be a powerful member of the standing committee also decided not to talk about the verdict.
Abdullah Al Noman, who might not be a member of the standing committee, has been serving BNP for several years. The Chittagong BNP was seasoned up because of his efforts. Nothing was heard from him regarding the verdict.
Shah Moazzem Hossain who came from Jatiya Party (JaPa) and became the vice-chairman did not also provide any feedback about the verdict. Once he was famous for making vulgar comments. Now he is counting time to move into another party.
Another vice-chairman Major (Ret.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has also folded-up himself regarding the verdict. He is busy spending time in preparing for the election.
Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf is also an important leader of BNP. Now he is a vice-chairman. He has also moved himself away from all the controversy. He is not much interested about the movement capitalizing the verdict.
Air Vice Marshal (retd.) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury is not to be seen in the anti-gov’t movement. Question has arisen in BNP itself why these prominent leaders are so quite. While there’s so much apprehension and anxiety over the verdict of Khaleda Zia, these leaders are busy in their respective constituencies to campaign for the ensuing election.
Are they members of that BNP which will emerge right after Begum Khaleda Zia gets convicted? Are they member of that BNP which will participate in the next election? Such rumors in recent times have intensified in BNP. The BNP leaders themselves are saying, “Keep an eye on them”.
