Japanese ‘Shoplifters’ wins Cannes Palme d`Or


The Japanese family drama Shoplifters has won the best film award, the Palme d`Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The jury chose the Japanese director Hirozaku Kore-eda`s creation from the shortlist of best film yesterday (Saturday) in the 71st edition of the Cannes this year. The poverty of day to day life has been highlighted in a realistic way in this family drama.

The US director Spike Lee has won the runner-up Grand Prix for his anti-racism satire BlacKkKlansman. The film was created on the intrusion of a black police officer in a white supremacist organization. A special Palme d`Or was awarded to French-Swiss Jean-Luc Godard for his Image Book.

A little-known Italian actor Marcello Fonte won the Best Actor Award. This recognition was given to him because of his great acting of Matteo Garrone directed film `Dogman`. For an outstanding performance in Ayka, Samal Yeslyamova (Kazakhstan) won the best actress award. Also, the Oscar-winning Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski won the best director award for his love story Cold War.
