Bangladesh wins ECOSC membership
Bangladesh has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2020-2022 term from the Asia-Pacific region after securing 181 votes out of 191 on Friday.
After the announcement of the results, the Permanent Representative (PR) of Bangladesh to the UN Ambassador Masud Bin Momen said, “The victory is a unique gift for the people of Bangladesh on the eve of celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh`s independence. This membership of ECOSOC will help us achieve sustainable LDC graduation and accelerate progress in the implementation of Agenda 2030.”
The election was conducted under the Presidency of 73rd United Nations General Assembly president María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés through a secret ballot. In this 54-member council, Thailand, South Korea and China are the other countries elected from the same region.
