In order to determine the post-election program schedule, Jatiya Oikya Front`s top leaders met at Dr. Kamal Hossain`s Bailey Road residence on Tuesday afternoon. No other leader except Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the meeting from BNP. Although many BNP leaders were invited at the meeting, none agreed to go with Mirza Fakhrul.
BNP is the largest party in Jatiya Oikya Front coalition. Since the election, many of the top BNP leaders have expressed doubts over the role of Oikya Front. Especially there has been an open discussion about the exact role that Dr. Kamal plays in BNP. They believe Dr. Kamal is working for a foreign state and the ruling Awami League. Legitimizing the present government by convincing BNP to participate in the national polls was Dr. Kamal`s main objective. Barrister Moudud Ahmed publicly spoke about this before. Mirza Abbas, another top BNP leader, has requested the party`s secretary general to not maintain any relation with Oikya Front. Other leaders also lost their interest in Oikya Front.
In the end, two top leaders of BNP kept communication with Oikya Front. One is secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul and the other is the standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan. But Nazrul Islam Khan has now started to avoid Oikya Front meetings in response to the extensive reaction of BNP leaders and activists. Now BNP secretary general is only concerned with Oikya Front.
A BNP leader said that we are urging to the executive committee to make decisions about Oikya Front. But the secretary-general is not listening to us. Another leader of BNP, on condition of anonymity, said we believe Oikya Front’s recent activities are to take the elected members of BNP to the parliament.
It is now only a matter of time to see what this dispute over the Oikya Front ultimately brings for Fakhrul.
