The lawyers of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday have filed appeals with the Election Commission against the rejection of her nomination papers of three constituencies.
At around 12: 40 pm, Barrister Kaisar Kamal submitted the appeal for Feni-1 constituency while Barrister Nowshad Jamin for Bogura-6 and Advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder for Bogura-7 constituencies at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city.
After filing appeals, the lawyers told reporters Khaleda’s nomination papers were rejected illegally. This is a conspiracy of the government. They said the rule that rejected her nomination papers was not applicable to Khaleda Zia.
It is to be noted that the corresponding returning officers canceled Khaleda’s nomination papers due to the conviction of corruption. Khaleda submitted nomination papers to contest from Bagura-6, Bagura-7, and Feni-1.
District returning officer Md Wahiduzzaman rejected the nomination papers of Khaleda in the Feni-1 constituency on December 2 morning. On the other hand, Bagura returning officer rejected her nomination papers in Bagura-6 and Bagura-7 constituencies.
On October 29, Khaleda was convicted and sentenced to seven years` rigorous imprisonment by a special court in Dhaka in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
Khaleda was taken to the jail after being sentenced to five years` imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust case by the same court on February 8. The High Court later on October 30 extended her jail terms in the case to 10 years.
