Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Thursday announced that the 11th parliamentary election will be held on December 23. The official counting for the day of election has started with the announcement. It is going to be a crucial time for the ruling Awami League before the election as it has to be monitor and resolve party conflicts in different corners of the country alongside running the election campaign or managing organizational activities. For instance, in the Patuakhali-3 constituency, there is a conflict between two Awami League leaders that has ruined the solidarity of the politics in the locality.
The Patuakhali-3 constituency comprises Dashmina Upazila and Galachipa Upazila with 2 lac 98 thousand 497 voters, and it is the 113th number constituency. The conflict began when both AKM Jahangir Hossain and Golam Maula Rony wanted the nomination of Awami League from this constituency.
Upazila Awami League Advisor AKM Jahangir Hossain is the current parliament member from this constituency. He was elected MP from this seat in 1991, 1996 and 2001 elections. But in the context of the one-eleven, he was ousted from the party for making an indecent remark on party President Shaikh Hasina and failed to get the nomination in the 9th parliamentary election.
Golam Maula Rony got Awami League nomination filled his empty place. In the 9th parliamentary elections of 2008, Rony beat BNP`s Shahjahan Khan by nearly 40 thousand votes by getting 1 lac 20 thousand 10 votes.
However, in the 10th parliamentary elections of 2014, AKM Jahangir Hossain again embraced by the fate and managed to win. The then MP Rony earned the discontent of party`s high command for his unrestrained behavior such as his imprudent decisions, aggressive attitude towards local senior leaders, derogatory remarks on party`s MP and ministers and involved in a clash with a top-level businessman. For this reason, he did not get the nomination last time.
At present, both Jahangir Hossain and Golam Maula Rony`s groups become active in the constituency. Showdown and grouping are at the peak focusing the nomination. There are allegations against AKM Jahangir of using his power. And because of this, the local leaders and activists are agitated. Even in the past few days, there had been clashes between Jahangir and his opponents. Besides, local Awami League leaders and activists alleged that although this area was known as the base of Awami League they are not in a good position here. In all, there is an unstable situation in Patuakhali politics.
In such a situation, Awami League will have to work hard to resolve the internal party conflict if it wants to maintain its winning streak in this constituency, political analysts said.
