A meeting of the 20-party alliance was held at BNP Chairperson`s Gulshan party office on Thursday night. Followed by the 20-party meeting, another meeting of the national and standing committees was also held. Tarique Rahman was connected through telephone from London during the meeting. He talked with BNP standing committee leaders.
Sources told although none of the 7-point demands has been achieved and the government remains firm on Begum Khaleda Zia`s release, still Tarique Zia directed his fellow leaders to go to the polls as part of the movement.
After Tarique made his decision clear, the position of BNP leaders changed. Those were against the election a while ago started searching for reasons to participate in the election.
Responsible sources of BNP said Tarique wants BNP to submit nomination papers. After the submission, they will observe how far the government remains neutral during the election and how strong the position of Election Commission (EC) will be. If BNP sees that the government and the EC are not acting fair in the election, they boycott the election. They believe the movement will be stronger then.
Tarique asked to convey his message to Jatiya Oikya Front. However, the standing committee members believe they were not given sufficient time to submit nomination papers. It is necessary to defer the election schedule. Meanwhile, Bikalpa Dhara has already requested to defer the schedule for 7 days on Thursday. However, the decision of participation in the upcoming election will be made in today`s Jatiya Oikya Front meeting.
It is to be noted that Jatiya Oikya Front leaders will hold a public rally from today. Sources said they would discuss this matter of election among themselves during this time.
