Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina`s press conference regarding the dialogue was scheduled to be held today (Thursday). But in a statement sent to the media from the Prime Minister`s Office last (Wednesday) night, it has been said, the press conference was postponed due to inevitable reasons. Many questioned why the press conference has been canceled. According to the Prime Minister`s press wing, the PM has postponed her press conference for two reasons.
The first reason is, the government has expressed its inability to meet the unacceptable demands of Jatiya Oikya Front leaders claimed in yesterday`s (Wednesday) second round of dialogue held in Ganabhaban. So, it was predicted by Awami League that after leaving dialogue, Oikya Front leaders would claim that the dialogue has not been successful and would provide speeches opposing the dialogue or the announcement of election schedule. However, after 2-hour meeting in Dr Kamal Hossain`s Bailey Road residence, Jatiya Oikya Front did not give any positive or negative comments about dialogue at the press conference. Rather, they talked about taking forward the dialogue. Oikya Front spokesman and BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the talks could continue even after the schedule is announced, if necessary. Since they did not directly reject the dialogue or did not speak negative about the election schedule, the Prime Minister thinks there is no need for a press conference at the moment. Because the media already had the contents of the discussion that happened between the two parties.
And the second reason is that the schedule of eleven parliamentary elections will be announced today. Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda will announce the schedule today (Thursday) at 7 pm. Election schedule is the most important issue of the country at the moment. So, the Prime Minister thinks that if she holds a press conference, the matter of election schedule will be somewhat faded. The public`s attention can be removed from the schedule. That is why the Prime Minister has decided to prioritize the election schedule announcement.
But many sources of Awami League have said that if Jatiya Oikya Front begins to talk negatively about the dialogues, then the Prime Minister may hold the press conference at any time.
