The court has issued an arrest warrant against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed issued the warrant on Wednesday in the case of making offensive remarks over the number of martyrs of the Great Liberation War and the intellectuals. Khaleda expressed her doubts about the number of martyrs of Liberation War at the discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Muktijoddha Dol at capital`s Engineers Institution on December 21, 2015. She said, "Today they claim lacs of Bangladeshi was martyred but there are many debates about this." At that time she also made offensive remarks about Bangabandhu. Another accused in the case, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy made offensive remarks over the martyred intellectuals and said their sacrifice was foolish in another meeting held at the National Press Club on December 25 of that year.
Earlier, the plaintiff of the case, AB Siddiqui, applied for an arrest warrant against Khaleda-Gayeshwar. After the hearing, the court issued an arrest warrant and determined 7th August to submit the report of the arrest.
Even after the arrest warrant, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy went to the BNP`s central office at Nayapaltan today (Thursday) morning. He spoke to the activists there. Begum Zia`s appeal hearing in the Zia Orphanage Corruption case was going on this morning. The BNP`s Standing Committee member talked about it and about the campaign of the three city corporation elections.
It is learned that Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was expected to go to Barisal. The main purpose of his visit is to attract minority voters. One of the leaders of the party asked Gayeshwar today, whether he is going to Barisal since he has an arrest warrant against him.
An agitated Gayeshwar Chandra said, why should not I go? Am I Rizvi? Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said, they can arrest me whenever they want. If they arrest me I will have only one request that is to stay close to Begum Zia.
After this incident, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy left the party office. It is learned that the BNP standing committee member is going to Barisal within the next couple of days.
