BNP leaders, activists, and her family members cannot meet with the imprisoned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for 11 days. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir complained this at a press conference at the party`s central office in Nayapaltan on Wednesday morning. Fakhrul alleged Begum Zia was not given the status of a divisional prisoner.
Is Begum Zia really not getting VIP status? Are the relatives of the BNP chairperson being deprived of meeting her?
Begum Zia`s relatives last met her on 30 June. So, according to the rules, the next meeting of her relatives and others with her will be on 15th July. Because, according to the prison rules, if a convict has division privilege, he or she can meet his or her relatives and family twice a month.
The court gave Begum Zia rigorous five years imprisonment on February 8 in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. From 8th February to 11th July she has been in jail for 5 months and 3 days. According to the jail term, Khaleda Zia has got the opportunity to meet her relatives and others up to 10 days in the last five months.
However, Khaleda Zia`s relatives have met her 16 times so far. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met her once along with the Standing Committee members, and then separately. Standing Committee members met with Begum Zia two times. Khaleda Zia`s lawyers have met her seven times. Khaleda Zia`s personal physician has met her two times. That shows the relatives and others met Begum Zia 28 times.
Though there is a chance of meeting 10 times according to the rules, Begum Zia has had the opportunity to meet her relatives and others up to three times more. Still, how can BNP complain that Begum Zia is not being given enough opportunity to meet her relatives and leaders?
The opportunity given to Begum Zia proves that all are not equal before the law. If it was equal then she did not get the additional privileges.
