Today marks the 82nd birth anniversary of the soul personality of Bengali poetry Al Mahmud. He was born on this day of 1936 in Morail Village of Brahmanbaria District. Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud is a poet, novelist, short-story writer and journalist. He has enriched modern Bengali poetry in new ways, consciousness and speech by being active from the second half of twentieth century.
Al Mahmud`s work in Bengali poetry is dominated by his frequent use of regional dialects. He brought the colorful story of rural life of Bengal, the river-dependent localities, the life cycle of rural people and the eternal love-estrangement relation of men and women in his poetry sincerely.
He spent his childhood in Brahmanbaria, Comilla and Chittagong. His poems continue to be published when he was only 18. Mahmud started his career as a journalist. He used to write in Samakal, Chotushkone, Mayukh, Krittibas and Buddhadeb Bosu`s famous magazine Kavita. As a result, he became famous to the readers of Dhaka and Calcutta.
He started his career as the assistant editor of the Daily Millat newspaper. In 1955, he was appointed as the editor of Kafela. He obtained widespread recognition after Lok Lokantor was published in 1963. After that Kaler Kalosh, Sonali Kabin and Mayabi Porda Dule Otho established him as a first line poet in Bengali poetry.
Al Mahmud participated actively in the liberation war of 1971 as a poet and cultural activist. His other notable poetical works include, Arobbo Rojonir Rajhash, Bakhtiyarer Ghora and Nodir Bhitorer Nodi. Although famous as a poet, Al Mahmud is one of the most remarkable brave figures of the Bengali story. He has written short stories, novels and essays such as Pankourir Rakta and Upamohadesh.
For his contribution to Bengali poetry, he has been awarded with the Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Literary Award,Philips Literary Award, Joy Bangla Award, Humayun Kabir Memorial Award,Jibonananda Memorial Award, Kabi Jasim Uddin Award, Lalon Award.
