BNP apologizes to India

There is a brawl in BNP over its three leaders` visit to India. Abdul Awal Mintoo, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Humayun Kabir have held several meetings in seven days in Delhi without apprising party`s senior leaders. BNP standing committee member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said that he does not know anything about those meeting.

According to the sources, these three leaders were facing the pressure after returning from Delhi. The BNP leader asked, "What is the secret agreement BNP has had with India?" Not only the BNP, Awami League leaders also questioned, "What kind of bondage did BNP offer to India?"

Political analysts compare this visit to the June 2001 visit. In June 2001, a group led by Tarique Zia went to India and held several important meetings. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has complained in several speeches that the BNP came to power in 2001 by selling gas. So, BNP leaders have said openly," This India tour will be the turning point of Bangladesh politics. "

The main organizer of this tour is Abdul Awal Mintoo. He said, "The purpose of our visit was to make India realize the necessity of a participatory election." Mintoo said, "I think we have made India understand that a participatory election is necessary in Bangladesh." The BNP leader said, "India does not want to see another election like 2014."

However, many sources said that three BNP leaders have officially apologized to India for their role during the 2001-06 period in the meeting. They admitted that the BNP government could not take appropriate action against the separatists that time.

According to sources, India has asked about BNP`s position on three clear issues. First, they asked about the communication of Indian separatist groups with BNP. They wanted to know whether BNP will give opportunity to use Bangladesh as a corridor when it comes to power again.

Secondly, they wanted to know about BNP’s relation with extremist groups including Jamaat and whether BNP leaves this relationship.

Thirdly, they wanted to know about the opinion about the political future of Tarique Zia.
It is learned that BNP did not give any opinion about Tarique Zia despite giving immediate reply on the first two issues. However, in at least two meetings, Abdul Awal Mintoo said, "Tarique will not be directly in politics for now."

However, despite BNP`s apology for supporting the separatists in 2001-2006, India wants guarantee that such incidents will not happen in future.

But after returning home BNP leaders kept secrecy about their meetings with their party leaders. Many BNP leaders say that the main strength of BNP`s politics is about the opposition to India. If this power ends up becoming an appeasement policy, then how does BNP`s identity remain intact?
