Two young men visiting a village in north-eastern Assam state were lynched by a frenzied mob who suspected them of child kidnappers. It happened because of some WhatsApp rumors.
The Indian police have arrested 16 suspects so far who beat the men to death.
It is tough to debunk the rumors on social media and they circulate almost at the speed of light. Just a few days back, not more than a fortnight, a rumor took the social media by the storm which triggered communal violence in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong.
The two victims have been identified as Nilotpal Das, an audio engineer, and Abijeet Nath, a digital artist. They were from the same city of Guwahati, the largest city in Assam. All they did was asked for a direction from the people who brutally killed him.
The killers were so poised of their deed that when Nilotpal Das’ girlfriend called his phone it was answered by the alleged attackers who told her, ‘We’ve lynched him. Wait until tomorrow, you’ll read about him in the newspapers.’
The faces of the victims were knifed so brutally that it was hard for the relatives of the victims to recognize them.
