How much did you get to keep me in jail?

Once again BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been in jail for months, became furious at BNP’s lawyers. With an irritated voice, she charged, ‘What have you been doing? Why couldn`t you grant bail in such minor case? How much did you get to keep me in jail?’ The BNP chairperson made the comment today evening when the five lawyers including advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and advocate Sanaullah Miah visited her in jail. Sources in jail have confirmed this.

The five lawyers visited to get her signature for filing the bail petition in lower court. So far, seven arrest warrants have been issued against her in seven different cases. The arrest warrants were issued one after another since last March. However, her lawyers did not take any initiative to file bail petition against any of those arrest warrants except the two cases of Cumilla.

It has been known that when the BNP lawyers, led by Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, visited Khaleda, she instructed them to take bail in those cases. She gave the same instruction to BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul when he visited her in jail. However, the BNP lawyers did not take any initiative regarding this. According to sources in jail, the BNP lawyers told Khaleda that they were awaiting the verdict of Supreme Court. Khandaker Mahbub Hossain reasoned, ‘We presumed that once the SC grants bail in this case, the remaining cases will also automatically get bail. The lower court will consider the order of SC as a direction.’ He further said, ‘It’s a violation of the law to show arrested in these cases. Because nobody is unaware of your imprisonment.’ advocate Sanaullah Miah said, ‘These arrest warrants are motivated.’ He gave an example of a case of Cumilla and said, ‘I filed bail petition there, but, after the hearing, the court gave me a no order. Now, we can’t go to the High Court.’

However, Khaleda Zia could not be satisfied with such logic of her lawyers. She believed, her lawyers could grant bail from the High Court if they tried it before. Khaleda said, ‘You could’ve sought bail in all cases from the Appellate Division showing my illness, but you didn’t do so.’

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 8 last in Zia Orphanage graft case. On May 16 last, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court granted her bail in this case. But, she remained in the old prison of Nazimuddin Road as she had been shown arrested in seven other cases.
