BNP’s consolation prize

BNP lost in Khulna City Corporation-KCC election. The ointment has been applied today in BNP`s yesterday`s (Tuesday) wounds. By 9 am today, the Appellate Division of Supreme Court has upheld the bail, granted by the High Court to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage corruption case. Though Khaleda Zia did not get the release but her long-awaited bail being in force in the Appellate Division has greatly reduced yesterday`s shame. BNP leaders, who were with a long face yesterday, look jubilant today. Now, nobody is interested in discussing the KCC election or has the time.

However, political analysts say that even though Khaleda`s bail is crucial after BNP’s defeat in Khulna but at this moment, it is just a consolation prize for BNP. The consolation prize does not carry importance such as the original prize, it only gives comfort. Likewise, Begum Khaleda Zia`s bail application remained upheld in the Appellate Division. Even after this order, Begum Zia will have to stay in prison because of her other cases. She will not be released from prison soon.

BNP also lost the way to get excited, create the disturbance or threaten over Khulna poll. BNP remains silent getting the consolation prize. They will be busy with this achievement for a few days.

According to analysts, BNP would announce programs over Khulna election. But before it announced such programs, the order of Begum Zia`s bail has filled BNP with self-complacency. Yesterday`s defeat becomes a distant history for them. They already forgot the disappointed face of their mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Manju.
