Today is historic Mujibnagar Day. Mujibnagar is a town of Meherpur. Here, the Provisional Government of Bangladesh was sworn in on April 17, 1971. It was the first government of the country which led the nation to the independence. The founding Father of the People`s Republic of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was named the president of the nation. The national anthem Amar Sonar Bangla was sung in chorus.
As Shiekh Mujib was in jail in West Pakistan, vice president Syed Nazrul Islam was appointed as the acting president of Bangladesh. Tajuddin Ahmed was appointed the first prime minister of Bangladesh.
To commemorate the historic day, the nation had been observing April 17 as the historic Mujibnagar Day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid issued separate messages recalling the Mujibnagar Government which led to it successful culmination.
Like every year, the government is arranging elaborate programs in Mujibnagar and in Dhaka to mark the day. The programs included hoisting the national flag atop the memorial monument at Mujibnagar at dawn.
Apart from hoisting the national flag, there are other programs like placing wreaths at the memorial monument, cultural programs, giving the guard of honor and parade etc.
In the capital, the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is also organizing a cultural program marking the day. And the ruling party Awami League is also organizing various programs across the country to mark the day.
