India has taken an initiative to mediate between the major parties of the country regarding the upcoming general election of the country. India`s approach would be to make the election participatory. General Secretary of Awami League (AL) Obaidul Quader is going to India next week and the BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is expected to visit India in the last week of March.
Although both parties have dismissed the report of India’s initiative for mediation, multiple diplomatic sources have confirmed that India has taken initiative to ensure a participatory election. The United States, United Kingdom, and European Union have endorsed India to take the diplomatic initiative.
According to sources, General Secretary of AL will meet with BJP’s top leaders in India. However, the most significant meeting will be held with Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. When contacted, Obaidul said, ‘I am going on a goodwill tour. It has nothing to do with the election. India is our friend.’
But sources have said that it is India who will decide, to what extent, BNP will be given the privilege to let them join and make the country’s upcoming general election participatory.
After the AL General Secretary’s visit, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul will visit India. However, the schedule of his tour is yet to be finalized.
