Khaleda Zia sentenced to 5 years in prison


Khaleda Zia has been sentenced to 5 years in prison in the Zia orphanage corruption case. In the same case, Tarique Rahman and four other accused were given 10 years imprisonment.

Akhtaruzzaman, the fifth Special Judge of Dhaka, announced the verdict in Bakshibazar of Old Dhaka today.

Earlier, Khaleda Zia had appeared in court at around 2 pm. Top leaders of BNP were present in the court.

According to the court sources, considering the age and social position of Begum Zia, her punishment has been reduced to five years. Another accused has been given 10 years in jail for the same offence though. Meanwhile, it is known that Khaleda Zia will not be able to appeal until she receives the certified copy of the verdict.

The verdict began on Thursday at the special judge`s court established in the premises of Alia Madrasa in Bakshibazar, Old Dhaka. The summary of the 632-page verdict is read in the court.

Begum Zia left her Gulshan`s house to temporary court at around 12 pm.
