The verdict of Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case will be announced today (Thursday). Judge of the Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka Md. Akhtaruzzaman will announce the verdict in a temporary court at Bakshibazar, Old Dhaka. To deal with any kind of unpleasant situation, a tight security measure has been taken in the adjacent areas of the court. One of the accused in the case Sharfuddin Ahmed has already been presented before the court from prison.
Earlier, the court fixed the date for the verdict on January 25 after the hearing of defence and prosecuting arguments.
Khaleda Zia is on bail and one of the accused in the case. Her elder son, Tarique Rahman (Living in London), is also accused in this case. Besides, former MP of Magura Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed are in jail in the case. Former principal secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and late president Ziaur Rahman`s nephew Mominur Rahman are absconding since the beginning of the case.
During the announcement of the verdict, the former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the main accused in the case, will be present in the court, said her lawyer Sanaullah Mia.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case in Ramna Police Station on July 3, 2008, on charges of embezzling money that came from abroad for the orphans. After the investigation, ACC’s assistant director Harunur Rashid gave the charge sheet in the court on August 5, 2009. It has been alleged that the accused have embezzled take two crore 10 lac 71 thousand and 671.
