HC rules on gov`t to takeover illegally occupied water-bodies



The High Court on Tuesday directed Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur to submit a report after taking over the illegally grabbed and filled up water bodies and ponds of the city within 30 days.

An HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the `suo moto` order following a report published in the daily ‘Prothom Alo’ on Tuesday.

The HC ordered to submit a list of all water bodies and ponds of the city.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why directions would not be given for proper management to take over 384 ponds which have already been occupied illegally and the ponds which are being intended to be seized too.

Secretaries of Local Government Division, Ministry of Land, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ministry of Home, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and Gazipur DC have been asked to reply the rule within 30 days.

The ‘Prothom Alo’ published the report saying that the ponds and water bodies of the city are illegally grabbed and filled up.
