On 9 October, an arrest warrant was issued for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and 45 other party leaders and activists for a case which accused them of a petrol bomb attack that took place in Chouddangram upazila in 2015.
The order was passed by Comilla District and Session Judge Jesmin Ara Begum. The arrest order also includes prominent names like Rafiqul Islam Mia, MK Anwar, Vice Chairman Shawkat Mahmud and Senior Joint Secretary Rizvi Ahmed.
Earlier the warrant was issued, the court accepted a charge sheet that was filed under the Explosive Substances Act. It was pressed by Sub-Inspector Mohamad Ibrahim and the Investigation Officer of the case against 78 people, including the party chairperson and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists.
The petrol bomb attack took place on February 3, 2015, on a bus at Jogmohanpur in Chouddagram upazila which left eight passengers dead on the spot and injured several others. An anonymous group of miscreants led this atrocious attack on innocent people during the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s anti-government movement.
